Texas Gulf Surfing Association Kicks Off Its 28th Year of Competitive Surfing

Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA) board of directors met on July 12th for its annual board meeting and planning session for the 2016/2017 season.  Lots of great discussion took place and taking into consideration the concerns and ideas of TGSA members, the upcoming season will bring changes and the opportunity to make this the best season ever.  A season schedule has been set and the same two week window will be called for the contests. If the contest is cancelled it will be moved to the back of the schedule. The biggest changes to TGSA this year include adding a Stand-up Paddleboard division, the assisted Micro-Grom division will not be counted towards team points, Junior Longboard board requirements have been adjusted, and there will be no heat re-runs. The season schedule is listed at the bottom.

TGSA is excited to announce the addition of an Open Men and Open Womens SUP division for the 2016/2017 season. We encourage anyone interested to sign up and support this new division of TGSA. We look forward to the new faces this will bring to Texas Gulf Surfing Association.

Beginning this year, the Mirco-Grom division will not count towards team points. TGSA has come to the conclusion that the assisted division brings two people into play and the one assisting can affect the outcome of a heat greatly. In the Micro-Grom division there will be no board length requirements.

In hopes of adding more competitors to the Junior Longboard division and in a move to more align with other Surfing Associations, the length of the board for Junior Longboard division must be at least 3’ above competitor’s height.  If a junior wishes to compete in the Men, Women or Open Longboard divisions, the board must be a minimum of 9’. Shortboard divsion all boards must be no greater than 18″ over competitor’s height.

Heat Re-runs were discussed and no other organization allows heat reruns.   Competitors are allowed to protest a heat up to 30 mins after the heat is completed.  However all rulings of the head judge and competition director are final.

All-Star team members for this year include:  Menehune Girls – Mia Marr; Menehune Boys – Robert Murphy; Girls – Maddie Garlough; Boys – Ian Appling; Junior Women – Aransas Blaha; Junior Men – Kelly Scroggs; Wild cards – Carly Hudson and Dallas Cunningham.

Sponsorships……… Sponsorship is a big part of TGSA’s ability to operate throughout the year.  If you are interested in sponsoring an event, a blanket sponsorship throughout the year or any other portion of TGSA operations, please contact John Blaha at jdblaha.tgsa@gmail.com for more information.

The TGSA Board thanks its entire membership for their continued support, the support of event sponsors and for bringing your concerns and ideas to the board.  We sincerely hope that the 2016/2017 season is the best ever and look forward to getting it kicked off in August with the Grom Roundups and in September with the South Padre Island Open.  The 2016/2017 schedule is as follows.
